A small powder room with a lot of atmosphere, this jewel of a space was designed by JoAnn Hartley Interiors with the DIY passion of the client’s husband.

The wall finish began with the love of the tile floor.

The tile itself is heavily striated, with shades of gray, silver and pearlescent, all slightly raised in relief.

It was decided to match the walls to the floor but in a much looser pattern – quite the challenge!

As I’m always up for a challenge I dove in, making sample after sample until satisfaction finally arrived in the form of a beautiful graining tool I have in my bag of tricks.

The tool is used to create the ‘ticking’ in wood grain and was perfect for embellishing the walls with a gossamer thatching, creating a richly textured surface.

The clients were wonderful to work with too and I hope we have many more fun projects to interpret together.
